A big welcome to Marc Krulewitch, thank you for joining us on BooksChatter.

What was the inspiration for Gold Coast Blues?

"The basic premise of Gold Coast Blues, the third book in the series, was inspired by a friend of mine who grew up in a crime-ridden neighborhood near Newark, New Jersey, and was insightful enough to move far away once he reached the age of 18. Had he not moved, according to my friend, he’d either be in prison or dead."
How much of yourself is reflected in this book, and how?
"The contradictory personality of my private investigator, Jules Landau, is very much a reflection of myself. Although sarcastic, cynical, and sometimes brutal, Jules also has a caring, compassionate, animal-loving, vegetarian side."
Can you tell us something quirky about Gold Coast Blues, its story and characters?
"Jules’s cat, Punim, was my longtime companion who passed away not too long ago. Despite Jules’s’ vegetarian diet, he feeds Punim raw organs of small animals."
Who would you recommend Gold Coast Blues to and what should readers be aware of (any warnings or disclaimers)?
"Anyone who likes fairly complex and convoluted plots full of irony with engaging characters should enjoy my books. My PI is fairly cerebral and sensitive to what’s going on in the world, although he doesn’t pontificate. "
What do you like to write and read about? Do you stick to a particular genre or do you like to explore different ones?
"I used to write short stories in the literary genre and also wrote a literary novel. After many years with little success, I decided to investigate the various popular genres and settled upon trying my hand at the detective/murder mystery. My hope was that I could create interesting characters while employing some literary style that reflects the real world that we live in."
What is your writing process?
"Typically, I designate 7 a.m. to 12:30 – 1:00 as the time I will try to write. Some sessions are very productive, others not so much. Either way, I don’t beat myself up over daily word production."
And as a final quirky thing, to get to know you a little bit better... do you have a pet or something that is special to you that you could share with us?
