ℚ Space Drifters: The Emerald Enigma [1] - Paul Regnier

Today we have the pleasure of meeting up with author to talk about Space Drifters  (, Enclave Publishing, 320 pages), a Sci-Fi Space Opera, which is the first instalment in The Emerald Enigma series.

“One part Han Solo, another part Arthur Dent, Paul Regnier’s Glint Starcrost is a captain I’d follow to the edge of the universe and beyond!” –Jesse Baruffi, author of The Empress of Thieves

A big welcome to Paul Regnier - thank you for joining us on BooksChatter.

What was the inspiration for Space Drifters?
"I feel like I’ve been collecting pieces of inspiration over the years from great sci-fi books and movies.  I don’t think I could point to just one source.  The original Star Wars trilogy set my sci-fi imagination loose and the original Star Trek series definitely left its mark early on.

The science fiction books that have hit me the hardest are John Carter, The Space Trilogy, Sphere, The Stainless Steel Rat and The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy."
How much of yourself is reflected in this book, and how?
"In a way, the characters are different sides of me pushed to an exaggerated level.  For example, Captain Starcrost would be my impulsive, assertive side whereas Blix (the first mate) represents my thoughtful, calm side."
The first thing that draws me to a book is its cover. Can you tell us about your cover for Space Drifters - why you chose that concept and who the artist is.
"Thank you, I really like how the cover turned out.  It was done by an amazing artist named Tomislay Tikulin.  It felt current but also had that classic, retro 80s sci-fi book style that I love."
I must admit it does have kind of a Star Trek feel to it.

Why should we read Space Drifters and what sets it apart from the rest?  What makes your book unique?

"I think most people who like the Space Opera/ Space Fantasy type of book, especially mixed with humour would enjoy reading Space Drifters."
Can you tell us something quirky about Space Drifters, its story and characters?
"With science fiction, it’s always fun to play with the idea of future technology.  One of the ideas I have in the story was the ability for the characters to send “thought messages.”  I took the concept of texting and applied it to the idea of sending messages via thought in the form of animated icons (kind of like emojis).  And yes, most of the characters find them just as annoying, even when sent through thought waves."
Who would you recommend Space Drifters to and what should readers be aware of (any warnings or disclaimers)?
"I wrote the book hoping that anyone who enjoyed sci-fi (especially the space opera style) could enjoy the adventure and laugh along with the humour.  I do notice some sci-fi books have a negative view of God and/or religion in general.  If that’s the kind of book a reader is looking for, they probably wouldn’t like my book.  I take a positive view of God and people of faith.  That being said, I’m definitely not preachy or heavy handed.  My goal in writing is to create an entertaining space adventure that hopefully anyone can enjoy."
If you could / wished to turn Space Drifters and the The Emerald Enigma series into a movie, who would be your dream team?
"It’s a crazy thought that seems unreachable but if I could be allowed to dream for a moment, I think the feel of Galaxy Quest was right on point. "
I absolutely adore Galaxy Quest - I am smiling just thinking about it!

What do you like to write and read about?  Do you stick to a particular genre or do you like to explore different ones?

"I like speculative fiction in general but these days I prefer sci-fi, especially of a space fantasy/space opera nature."
What is your writing process?
"I always start in a notebook.  There’s just something about putting a pen to paper that prompts a unique creative flow.  After that, I transfer the writing to the computer, getting an initial round of editing done in the process."
What is in store next?
"I’m currently finishing the sequel to Space Drifters.  Once it’s finished, I’ll be working with an editor to whip it into shape."
And as a final quirky thing, to get to know you a little bit better... do you have a pet or something that is special to you (this could be absolutely anything!)? Could you please provide us with a picture of you with them / it?
"I’ve attached a pic of me and my dog Sammy"

Hello Sammy!  What a cutie!  Thank you for sharing him with us :-)  We look forward to reading Space Drifters and we wish you all the best with the rest of the tour!
